The Taurus Mountains, or the Taurus Mountains for short, is a mountain chain that includes many mountain ranges, extending from the Teke Peninsula to Syria, and even inland to the Iraqi border, parallel to the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. The highest point of this chain is the 3767-meter Kızılkaya peak.
The Taurus Mountains are examined in 3 parts. Its sections and the mountain chains are as follows, from west to east;
Western Taurus: Akdaglar, Bey Mountains, Katrancik Mountain, Geyik Mountains. The Western Taurus Mountains or Antalya Taurus Mountains form an arc around the Antalya Bay, starting from the Teke Peninsula. It is separated from the Central Taurus Mountains by the Taşeli Plateau and the Göksu River in the east.
Middle Taurus: Akçalı Mountains, Bolkar Mountains, Aladağlar, Tahtalı Mountains. The Central (Middle)Taurus Mountains begin roughly from the Mersin-Antalya border and continue to the Binboğa Mountains in the northeast direction.
Southeast Taurus: Nurhak Mountains, Malatya Mountains, Maden Mountains, Genç Mountains, Bitlis Mountains. It geographically forms the northern border of the Southeastern Anatolia Region and Northern Mesopotamia. The Tigris River takes its source from this part. The western border of the Southeast Taurus Mountains starts from the Ceyhan River valley with Ahır Mountain and Engizek Mountain. It reaches Hakkari region with Bey Mountains, Hazarbaba Mountain, Maden Mountain, Mastar Mountain, Akdağ, Akçakara Mountains, Muşgüneyi Mountains, İhtiyarşahap Mountains. There are high mountains of Turkey around Hakkari. Between Şırnak and Şemdinli, there are impassable steep and sharp mountains reaching 3000–4000 m altitude: Karadağ, Sat Mountain, Glacier (Cilo) Mountains, Karadağ (north of Hakkari), Sümbül Mountain, Samur Mountain, Altın Mountain, Serdolusu Mountain, Tanintanin Mountains. These mountains are arranged parallel to each other.
