Neither the history nor the origin of the name of the village is known for sure, its old name is “Bolasan”. The village of Chaltepe is the intersection point of many surrounding villages.
Today the village is an important tourist center with its history, natural beauties, streams, plateaus and natural village life. The village has cozy accommodation with a rustic design and restaurants serving excellent traditional cuisine.
The village is located 120 km from Antalya and 95 km from Manavgat, and is located at the very starting point of the Koprulu canyon, in the valley of the Köprüçay stream.
The village is engaged in the cultivation of thyme, beekeeping, animal husbandry and agriculture.
Climate: Although the village is located in the Mediterranean climatic zone, it is more influenced by the continental climate due to the fact that the mountains run parallel to the sea and temperate air cannot penetrate inside. Snow falls almost every year in the region. The number of frosty days does not allow the cultivation of citrus and greenhouse crops. Rural residents can only engage in gardening during the summer months to satisfy their own wants and needs.
The only agricultural product that contributes to the economy of the village is thyme.
Thyme, harvested from the plateau in autumn, is brought to the village on mules under difficult conditions as there is no access road. The roads are quite steep and dangerous. The villagers endure this difficult and dangerous journey at the cost of their lives.
The village of Chaltepe was declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2006 as the world’s most natural thyme and sage growing area. Also in the village there is a manual packing shop for spices.
Beekeeping is another type of economic activity in the village. In recent years, the villagers have taken up beekeeping and honey production has begun to increase. The peculiarity of the product is that it is thyme honey, it is completely natural and smells like thyme. In this regard, honey produced only in the village of Chaltepe is expensive, and the protein value of honey is quite high. Beekeeping may become an important economic activity for the villagers in the future.
