Beyşehir Lake is Turkey’s third largest lake, the largest freshwater lake, located in the Lakes Region, on the territory of Konya and Isparta provinces.
It is located in a tectonic depression surrounded by the Taurus Mountains in the west and south, the volcanic Erenler Mountain in the east, the Sultan Mountains and Anamas Mountain in the northwest-southeast direction.
The surface of the lake, which is 1.121 m high from the sea and has a surface area of 651 km², has a length of 50 km in the SE-NW direction and a width of 18-20 km perpendicular to this direction. The widest area is 26 km between Çiftlik village and Kaşaklı Bay. Its narrowest point is 14 km between the villages of Hoyran (Gölyaka) and Akburun.
Its waters are fresh and its depth is around 8-9 m at most. The deepest point is mentioned as 12, 14, 15 m in different sources. The west coast is deep and steep, the north coast is deep, and the south and east coast is shallow. The lakes are fed by the streams and springs that pour into the lake with precipitation. If more water comes into a lake than it loses through evaporation, the lake waters rise. Excess water of the lake begins to flow out in a stream at the lowest part of the lake basin.
It is surrounded by mountains exceeding 2,000 m in height. Excess water is given to Çarşamba Water through the canal. Beyşehir Lake flows into Suğla (Karaviran) Lake by traveling approximately 60 km in the southeast direction via the Çarşamba (Beyşehir) Stream called “Uluarık”.
